Antipsychotic drugs have a central role in treating schizophrenia, but they are associated with a variety of side effects. One of the most dangerous adverse effects of these agents is prolongation of the heart rate-corrected QT interval (QTc). QTc prolongation is associated with the occurrence of torsades de pointes, a polymorphic ventricular tachycardia which may precipitate lethal ventricular fibrillation and sudden death.
